说明：明清之际，文人崇尚天然之趣，喜以自然形象製作文房器，于简约中彰显雅兴，并蔚为一时风尚，题材之特别，内容之丰富，开一代未有之奇，此件笔海即是受此影响而製作的文房用品。笔海红木质地，乃断取百年大材刳挖而成，规格硕大，造型雄浑，庄重大气。平口直腹，薄壁身重，可鉴木材之精，器底嵌接，打洼精细，呈玉环形。外壁尊树木之原始形状，稍事雕刀，又琢出一些树瘤、树结，斑驳凹凸，颇具天然意趣，古朴大气。该笔海经长年使用摩挲，包浆油亮如缎，呈相温和含蓄，当为清代文人雅士文房陈设之佳器。
