铭文：端溪有石，其色紫巧，匠刳为一段竹，能饮隃糜胜于玉。天台潘西凤铭。潘西凤（1736-1795），字桐冈，号老桐，别署天姥山樵，以字行。新昌人，是清代乾隆年间的竹雕大家。侨居扬州，见识卓越，清雍正二年（1724），任清朝重臣、大将军年羹尧幕僚，多所匡助，后有献不纳，拂袖而归，矢志以布衣终。为王虚舟弟子，王精书法，以自写十七帖，命其书丹，刻于竹简，名曰《竹简十七帖》。摹勒精美，名重一时，翁方纲为之跋，嘉庆年间被收入内府。
