Description

A 1940's matched five piece tea and coffee service, comprising a bullet shape teapot, baluster form coffee and hot water pots, plus a cream jug and twin-handled sugar bowl, each with gadroon and foliate detail and raised on a footed base, the coffee and hot water pots with fruitwood handles and flame finals to the domed and hinged lids, the teapot slightly differing in design and with wood handle and finial, hallmarked Thomas Ducrow & Sons, Birmingham 1942 (hot water pot not marked but testing as silver); together with a later twin-handled rectangular tray with oblique gadroon rim and shell corner detail, hallmarked Birmingham 1958, same maker. Height of coffee pot 9.75 (25cm), maximum length of tray 23.5 (59.5cm), total gross weight 153.53 ozt (4775.3 grams). Lot appears in fairly good overall condition, all pieces displaying some general surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.Hinged lids all appear in good order. Visible seam lines. Particularly to the cream jug, looks to be a small repair at the join of the top of the handle to the rim and also along seam line. Some hinge pins sticking out a little bit. Tray with some patches of heavier tarnishing and also some deeper scratches to the plain centre and underside. Surface wear and rubbing to some of the hallmarks but mostly clear and legible with part hallmarks to lids.Hot water pot appears without hallmarks but when tested the results show around 92-93% Ag. Fellows uses a Thermo Scientific Nitron Handheld XRF Analyser to test metals. This technology is limited to examining metal to a depth of approximately 8 microns. Fellows does not guarantee the standard of silver unless an item is hallmarked. Results from electronically tested items should only be used as a guide and with caution, as false readings are possible.
