An impressive pair of early Victorian silver pedestal sauce boats, each of deep bellied form with fluted decoration and engraved coat of arms with lion crest and a motto below, raised on a scrolled pedestal foot with foliate detail and having a similarly decorated and applied scalloped rim and a flying scroll handle with female head surmount. Hallmarked Benjamin Smith III, London 1838. Height including handle 7 (18cm), weight 35.15 ozt (1093.3 grams). Of heavy gauge and both appear in good overall condition. Displaying some expected surface wear, marks and scratches in keeping with the age and use. Little surface nicks or gouges and pitting marks are visible, especially to the interiors and also around the engraved armorials. Further minor surface bruises to some areas.Seam or construction lines visible around the short stems. And floods of silver visible around the join of one of the feet on the underside. Some surface wear and rubbing to areas of the decoration, causing some slight loss of detail.Hallmarks located in a straight line below the lip, these with some rubbing but still clear and legible.Motto reads 'NIHIL SINE LABORE' meaning (there is) 'Nothing Without Work'.
