Thomas Palmer (19th century) 'The old keeper at home' Inscribed on the reverse with various notes on the artist, oil on panel 19 x 35cm, unframed Labels attached verso: Newspaper clipping Handwritten annotation: Eastern Daily Press, Swaffham, Oct. 27 1882 Text: FINE ART EXHIBITION / This exhibition was opened on Monday October 23rd for ten days, and contains a very good collection of pictures by the old masters, Maas, Teniers, Rebens, …uido, Mar…, Jacob Rysdael, Poussin, Watteau, Hogarth, M…, Wouvermann, and many others, together with works of a great many of the past and present generation of artists of lesser fame, some of which are excellent examples of brush work….Among amateurs in the oil colour room, Mr Thomas Palmer of Swanham, exhibits his painting of 'The Old Keeper at Home', a very nice picture, carefully painted and ably drawn, after the style of Wilkie, and above the run of amateur work, of which there are a few wretched specimens in the oils…. Further handwritten annotation at end reads: The 'Norfolk News' of the 20th Oct. 1882 gave the same critique of 'The Old Keeper at Home' Handwritten label 1: Painted by Thomas Palmer / 1847 invent. Handwritten label 2 (partially removed): 1847 – This interior of the...cottage in West Norfolk was...offhand. He is waiting for his…child to make him serve tea…asleep, and so have his dogs nearby.
