Stokes (English school, 18th century) Portrait of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Stafford Fairborne, head and shoulders, in a red coat and grey curled wig Inscribed on the reverse 'Sir Stafford Fairborne aged / 71 painted 30 years after the death of his first wife Dorothy Fane / J Stokes pinxit November 1737', oil on canvas, in a painted feigned oval 74 x 60cm Provenance: By descent within the family of the sitter; Wood Hall, Arkesden, Essex. Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas tension is slightly slack and there are minor knock near the to of the canvas with small tears. The paint layer is has a general pattern of wear and abrasion overall. The sitter's features have been reinforced with retouching. The varnish is clear and even. There is a layer of surface dirt present and insect droppings across the painting. The frame is in a poor, unstable condition.
