The paint layer is in a good, stable condition. Old varnish and dirt is caught in the texture of the paint, this is noticeable in the lighter passages such as the sitter's face. The varnish is even and semi matte. There are areas of abrasion to the varnish around the edges caused by framing. At the top edge are spots of house paint. Losses to the gilding on the front surface of the frame.
