Circle of Charles Jervas (early 18th century) Portrait of a lady in a red dress, three-quarter length, holding a sprig of jasmine Oil on canvas, in a painted feigned oval 74 x 62cm, in an 18th century carved and giltwood frame Provenance: By descent from the sitter to Mrs C S Williamson and Mrs Vickers; Sworders, 30 November 2010, Lot 723; Wood Hall, Arkesden, Essex. Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The paint layer is stable overall. An old damage below the sitter's hands has been repaired but the fill is now cracked and lifting. There are numerous areas of brushy retouching across the surface. The varnish has yellowed with uneven gloss across the surface. The varnish has also imbibed dirt giving the painting an uneven, grubby appearance overall. The gilding on the frame is slightly worn.
