Circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723) Portrait of King William III, head and shoulders, wearing the Order of the Garter Oil on canvas, in a painted feigned oval 73 x 59cm Provenance: Sworders, 24 September 2008, Lot 1215; Wood Hall, Arkesden, Essex. Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas is in plane with good tension. The paint layer is raised and cupped following the lines of the age craquelure. There are a few scattered losses across the surface. An old damage at the middle of right hand edge which has been repaired, but the fill is now cracked and uneven. There is some abrasion to the paint layer around the edges. There are retouchings across the background which are fairly well matched. The varnish is dull and yellowed. The frame has suffered from damage and is covered in bronze paint.
