Follower of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723) Portrait of King William III (1650-1702), three-quarter length, in armour, wearing the Sash of the Order of the Garter and holding a baton, a cavalry skirmish beyond Inscribed l.l. ‘K. Wm. ye 3d', oil on canvas 126 x 101cm Provenance: Olantigh Towers, Kent, The Property of the Trustees of the late J S W S Erle Drax, No. 1679 (old label refers); Cheffins, Grain and Chalk, Cambridge, 'The contents of Badmondisfield Hall, Wickhambrook, Suffolk', 11 February 1983, Lot 83; Wood Hall, Arkesden, Essex. Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The wooden stretcher has a few woodworm holes, although this does not appear to be active. The painting has areas of raised paint following the lines of the age craquelure, along the upper edge this is actively flaking with small losses present. The painting is compromised by an old, degraded varnish which is no longer adequately saturating the paint layers below and is yellow, matte and becoming opaque. An old damage near the centre of the painting has been filled and retouched, the fill is cracked and lifting. There are small, scattered retouchings across the surface. Old gilt frame has been painted gold. Old Inventory No. 1325 to the reverse. Old Olantigh Towers label with provenance to the reverse.
