字右甫，号椒堂，浙江平湖人。金石之学，上追欧、赵。刻印上追秦汉。工山水，精写意花卉，尤喜画梅。嘉庆十年进士。道光间官至漕运总督。由主事擢御史。上书言事，有直声。累官漕运总督，以清操著，林则徐比之于清端。。通经学，喜金石，尤嗜钟鼎文。著有《椒声馆诗文集》、《续纂积古斋彝器款识》、《吉金文释》、《鉏经堂集》、《古印证》等。
