Rare Chinese 19 Century Oil Portrait traditionally known as a Portrait of Li Hongzhang, Viceroy & Negotiator circa 1850's wearing a Mandarin Civil Rank Badge, a Court Necklace (Chaozhu), and probably dates before 1854 when he was awarded the privilege of wearing a Single-Eye Peacock Feather (awarded the Double Peacock in 1864) - missing in this painting. Height of art inches ( cm.) X width of art inches ( cm.). NOTE: Li Hongzhang, Marquess Suyi (1823-1901) was the Leading Statesman of the late Qing Empire, the Emperor's Counselor, Crown Prince's Grand Tutor, Grand Chancellor of the Wenhua Hall, etc. A General of the Qing Army, he quelled the Taiping Rebellion and served in important positions to the Imperial Court, including the Premier Viceroy of Zhili, Huguang and Liangguang. He was one of the first and certainly the Highest Mandarin ever to officially travel to Russia, Britain, Canada, and the USA (1896).
