ATTRIBUTED to CHARLES JERVAS (1675-1739
)MUSICIANS IN A SUB-STAND Antique restorations and scratches 91 x 76 cm
Born in Ireland, Jervas was Godfrey Kneller's assistant in London at the end of the 17th century. After a trip to Italy, he succeeded his master as painter to King George I.
Our painting shows the influence of contemporary French painting, that of Watteau or Lancret, introduced in London by Philippe Mercier, but in a sense of relationship between the characters that is typically English "conversation piece".
