Lot of four vintage coins from mid twentieth centuryDetails:1 p: 1961, 3 p: 1968, 5 p: 1964, 10 p: 1970The coinage in India dates back to fabulous antiquity. The spectacular array of coins includes Satvahanas, Kushanas, Cholas, Palas, the Mughal empire and the dynasties preceding it. Apart from these, the currencies issued by Sher Shah Suri and the Maratha empire had ramifications for the successive trends in currencies. The British East India Company monetized a range of coins and currency divisions that left a lasting impact and a legacy of its own in the minds of Indians. Annas and pice, introduced by the British, were demonetised after 1957. “Naya Paisa” (literally new paisa/pice) was introduced in 1957, in which schema the divisions were decimalised, marking a departure from the anna system.Coins such as 1 paisa, 2 paisa, 3 paisa etc were introduced in the same scheme. The prefix “naya” was dropped after 1964, and these coins continued to be in circulation well into the 80s. Most of them were demonetised in 2011, while minting stopped by 1982.Amongst others, the 3 paisa and 20 paisa coins are the rarest to come by in the present day and time.
