MAYANK SHYAM: Born in 1987 Mayank Shyam was initiated into painting by his late father Jangarh Singh Shyam. At 23 he is one of the youngest members of the Jangarh School. He has participated in a number of artist camps organized by Eklavya Book Publication, Bhopal (2004), Vanya Prakashan, Bhopal (2006) etc. He participated inhis first group exhibitionPrimal Force(2006) at Kolkata’s CIMA Gallery at the age of 19. Previously His other group shows includeKolkata Freedom : Sixty years after Indian Independence, CIMA Gallery, Kolkata and Museum Gallery, Mumbai (2008),In search of context,CIMA Gallery , Kolkata and Chemould Gallery, Mumbai (2009),Yeh Image Mahan – India meets Bharat, CIMA Gallery, Kolkata (2010) etc. His works were also included in the Indian Contemporary Artauction at Sotheby’s, New York, organized for the benefit of Kolkata Museum of Modern Art. In 2006 Mayank was conferred the state award by the Hasta ShilpaEvam Hathkargha Vikas Nigam, Bhopal.
One of Mayank’s motifs is the modern city which he portrays in his own distinctive style infusing it with a Gondi ethos. He has developed a distinct way of making birds which can be called “Mayank’s birds”. He has been using black most often, because he feels it is easy to draw the viewer’s attention with a lot of colours but more challenging to do it with black alone
