An early silver twin-handled cup and cover, late seventeenth or early eighteenth century, of typical form with two engraved armorials above a central girdle and raised on a spread circular foot, with simple scroll handles and a removable domed cover with further crest engraving. Hallmarks partly worn, leopard head and lion passant visible, indistinct maker's mark and date letter, cover appears unmarked. Height including cover 11 inches (28 cm), weight 51.37 ozt (1597.8 grams).
The first arms are of Sir William WHEELER (1726-1809) Baronet of Leamington Hastings Warwickshire, who in 1752 at Offchurch Warwickshire married Lucy KNIGHTLEY (1733-1791) daughter of Giles KNIGHTLEY (1674-1743) of Fawsley Northamptonshire by Angel STANLEY (1711-1779) daughter of William STANLEY Esq. of the Palatine of Chester. The second arms are of Sir William WHEELER (1705-1763) Baronet of Leamington Hastings Warwickshire, the father of the first Sir William WHEELER above who in 1724 at Leamington Warwickshire married Penelope GLYNNE (1706-1740) the daughter of Stephen WHEELER (1665-1729) 2nd Baron of Hawarden by Mary Sophia Evelyn (1676-1738). The WHEELER family have an earlier origin in Martin Hussingtree Worcestershire.Displaying some expected surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.Numerous surface dints, bumps and nicks throughout. Some more substantial including large dints to top of lid. Lid also with heavy knocks to inner rim Heavy scratched marks and tarnish to interior with slight impressions from handle on one side. Engraved armorials with some light surface wear and rubbing but overall still bright.On the underside, several holes in the metal or solder around the join. Scratch weight visible 51 : 17 : 0. Hallmarks are in the same location, partly worn. Part of maker's mark visible, possibly 'PH' Also part of date letter visible and could possibly be 1693Cover does not appear to be marked but does fit well even with all the knocks and dents around the edges of the inner rim.
