Joseph PaelinckChristus in EmmausÖl auf Holz. 54 x 41,5 cm.Geschnitzer Originalrahmen.ProvenienzBelgische Privatsammlung. Joseph PaelinckChrist at EmmausOil on panel. 54 x 41.5 cm.In the original carved wooden frame.ProvenanceBelgian private collection.Joseph Paelinck was a pupil of Verhaegen in Ghent before coming under the tutelage of Jacques Louis David in Napoleonic France in 1802. His talent was recognised soon after at the 1804 Salon in Ghent, and after this he received numerous commissions, including some from the royal family. In 1806 he returned to Belgium before leaving for a five year sojourn to Rome two years later. He was appointed as a teacher at the Brussels Academy in 1815 as well as being named court painter to the Queen. Paelinck's works reflect the varying styles of his times. His early works are more influenced by Neoclassicism, whilst his later works follow a more Romantic vein. This unusual depiction of Christ's appearance at Emmaus is unmistakably a product of his earlier years.
