A FINE SANDSTONE FIGURE OF VISHNU, Cambodia, Khmer, Angkor Vat Period, 12th ct., standing in samabhanga, his four arms broken, wearing a vertical striated sampot secured with a belt carved with a floral muster, part of his loincloth falling to the front in a double fishtail-shaped element, the reverse showing a butterfly-shaped ornament, naked torso sculpted with a belly-button, engraved nipples, his face displaying a serene expression with almond-shaped eyes below ridged eyebrows, broad nose, finely shaped lips, elongated earlobes, his braided hair combed in a chignon decorated with a cover and secured with a diadem knotted at the reverse and carved with a central floral band - Provenance: A written confirmation, dated 1999, proves that the sculpture has been part of an English private collection since 1967 - Mr. Martin Lerner, former senior curator of the Indian and Southeastasian Dept. at the Metropolitan Museum authenticicated this sandstone sculpture - Minor wear, partly slightly chipped
