In the style of Jin Tingbiao (died 1767), Luohan Riding a White Lion under a Wutong Tree, China, Qing dynasty, framed under glass, 56 x 31 cm, ink and colors on silkSignature: "Respectfully painted by Your subject Jin Tingbiao." One double-seal of the artist: "Your subject" (chen), "Tingbiao". A Luohan is riding on a white lion which looks a bit like a dragon and playing with a small green lion on his knee. The figures are painted in a fine quality in gongbi style with heavy colors whereas the Wutong tree at the right is executed in the calligraphic brush style of the Zhe school. Jin Tingbiao became a court painter in 1757, when he presented the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736-1795) on his Southern Inspection Tour with an album depicting Luohans in fine line drawing. He became one of the Emperor's most esteemed painters and did many works for him. In the Imperial catalogue of the Palace collection (Shiqu Baoji) there are 81 paintings by him listed, of which more than seventy bear inscriptions by the Qianlong Emperor - Property from an old European private collection, assembled in the 1960s - Very minor traces of age
