A FINE THANGKA OF THE FIFTH DALAI LAMA, Tibet, late 18th ct. Framed. Depicting the life of Dalai Lama Ngag.dbang blo-bzang rga-mtsho (1617-1682). The Fifth Dalai Lama is seated in the centre of the painting with legs crossed on a cushion placed on an elaborate throne, his right hand is showing the vitarkamudra while holding the stem of a lotus supporting a minute figure of Avalokiteshvara, his left holding the cakra, wearing finely painted monastic robes, his face with mesmerizing expression, specific bonnet, in front of him lamas and laymen presenting offerings, surrounded by various scenes from his life, including his birth and formation years, each inscribed in gold dBu can script. - Property from an important South German private collection, assembled between 1968 and 2005 mostly from Schoettle East Asian Art and Joachim Baader, Munich - Publ.
