|大黑天本是婆罗门教湿婆（即大自在天）的化身，后为佛教吸收而成为佛教的护法神，特别是在密宗中大黑天是重要的护法神，是专治疾病之医神与财富之神。藏传佛教认为大黑天是毗卢遮那佛（或称为大日如来）降魔时呈现出的忿怒相。有六臂、四臂、二臂玛哈嘎拉三种。六臂玛哈嘎拉是香巴噶举派护法神，亦是格鲁派的护法神。
