JOE DUNCAN GLEASON (American 1881-1959) "Portrait of Chief Seattle (Sealth) of the Suquamish Indians" Pencil drawing. Sight: 10 1/2 x 7 1/8 inches; Frame: 19 x 14 3/4 inches. Signed lower right: Duncan Gleason. Information on the sitter verso: "Chief Seattle" by Duncan Gleason on the reverse of the mat: "Chief Seattle was a Suquamish Indian, six feet tall, broad shouldered, and with a massive head. He was about 65 years old when the city of Seattle was named for him."Seattle (Sealth), chief of the Suquamish Indians from about 1810 until his death in 1866. His name lives on not only in Washington's largest city, but in its state history, which gratefully records him as "The greatest Indian Friend white settlers ever had". An Indian burial ground at Suquamish, Washington, 14 miles from Seattle, contains the grave of this great chief.
