题识：花事时正殷，庭墀斗红紫，弄笔写花真，聊尔得形似。道复。 |陈淳，字道复，凡经学、古文、诗词、书法，无不精研通晓。尝从文徵明学书画，极得文氏的赞许。画擅长写意花卉，尤妙写生，后人把他同徐渭并称“青藤白阳”，代表明代中期水墨写意花卉画的新格调。|此图写雌雄锦顾盼有姿，神情灵动。且设色艳丽沉着；牡丹或淡雅，或浓艳，与山石、锦鸡相互掩映，错落胡致，高贵脱俗，其用色勾线功力之深，花鸟造型之准令人叹服，又不失敦厚朴茂之趣，艺进于道者方可得此沉着痛快之境地。
